Choosing the right clothing and colors is really going to take your professional portrait to the next level. For family photos, having some kind of cohesive look throughout all your outfits will really make your photos gorgeous and timeless.

I would recommend you choose 2 or 3 colors and then mix and match them between you. This works really well in a studio portrait. Here are a few more tips to remember:

Avoid clothing with logos: They will date the images, and you want lovely, timeless images that can hang on your walls for years to come and not look dated. Also avoid any sports shirts that are performance style.

Stay away from busy patterns and loud colors (i.e., neon): The focus should be on you and your family. Muted and neutral colors are best (navy, cream, gray, light pink, olive green, etc.). Different textures like lace, cable knit, chambray, and wool add a layer of interest to the portraits and always photograph beautifully.

Make sure you are comfortable: You will sometimes be required to sit on the floor, so you need to make sure you can do that comfortably in what you are wearing. And try to make sure your clothes are wrinkle-free!
